Stop and call a professional whenever a job involves mains electricity beyond changing a bulb or a fuse, gas appliances, structural walls, roofing at height, or persistent leaks you cannot trace. These jobs carry real safety risks and can cause expensive damage when done wrong. DIY makes sense for cosmetic and simple mechanical fixes; safety-critical systems are worth paying for.

In a humid tropical climate the keys are airflow and speed: ventilate bathrooms and kitchens well, open rooms up regularly so air moves through, and fix roof or plumbing leaks as soon as they appear rather than letting moisture sit. Wiping down and drying surfaces where condensation forms also helps. Persistent damp patches usually point to a leak or drainage problem that is worth investigating properly.

A simple walk-around every few months catches most problems early: look at the roof and gutters, check taps and under-sink pipes for drips, test doors and windows, and watch for cracks or damp patches on walls. Describe the job clearly, ask what the work involves, and get the scope and price agreed in writing before anything starts. Be cautious of quotes that seem far too low, and for electrical, gas, or structural work always confirm the person is qualified and experienced in that specific type of job.
